Ciampino Airport (CIA)

Ciampino Airport (CIA)

Opened in 1916, Rome Ciampino Airport (CIA) and was Rome’s largest airport until 1961, when Fiumicino opened and became the main Rome airport. Recently Ciampino has seen something of a renaissance as a destination for budget airlines, with passenger numbers growing rapidly in recent years. The airport is currently used by Ryanair, Wizzair and Easyjet, who are gradually relocating to Fiumicino and will no longer serve Ciampino from late 2011.

Getting to the airport

The airport is located about 7.5 miles (12km) north-west of the centre of Rome. Although this is closer than Fiumicino, Ciampino is less accessible as it does not have a direct rail connection to the city centre.

By bus

Public and private bus and coach services operate to and from the airport. The closest railway station, Ciampino Città is approximately 10 minutes from the airport by bus, and costs €1. Alternatively you can take a bus direct to Termini (40 minutes), or join up with the Metro (Linea A) at Anagnina (30 minutes).

Taxi

There is a taxi rank located directly outside the airport terminal, and the cost of a journey to the centre of Rome is fixed at €30 for up to 4 passengers with luggage. Journeys to other destinations are calculated by the taxi’s meter. Always ensure you hire a licenced taxi – these are white, and clearly marked “TAXI”, and should have the licence number prominently displayed.

Car Hire

Several major car hire firms operate at the airport, with offices by the car park in Via Mameli, close to the airport entrance.
